"I Live In A Great Neighborhood...
Violence Will Never
Happen To Me!"
If people haven’t experienced violence in their life or have a preconceived notion that it’s going to take years and years for them to learn to be effective at countering violence, then it’s very difficult to convince them it’s worth getting training. It’s just hard to get them to seek out some of our information and actually find out that it’s not what they think; that in a very short amount of time you actually can become incredibly effective and that the way we teach this information results in you retaining it for a remarkably long time.
The sad thing is my client makeup is roughly 70/30. 70% of the people come to see me AFTER something has already happened. And they all tell me the same thing. “I live in the right neighborhoods. I live in a gated community. I have security in my building. I’ve never been in a fight in my life. My friends are all the right people. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.”
And I keep waiting and waiting until I get the But.... And the But... is when asocial violence, asocial criminal violence enters their life. Some point came where they needed to take action or they were going to be maimed, crippled or killed... and they didn’t know what to do.
And you do not want to have asocial violence enter your life... and not have something in your tool box to handle it.
It’s ridiculous. Why do most parents have their children learn how to swim? Is it so they could become Olympic swimmers? No. It’s so they don’t drown. If they fall in the pool, they want to make sure that they don’t drown. It’s just basic prevention.
And yet when it comes to the world of violence, a lot of people just want to have happy thoughts. They want to think to themselves, If I just think happy thoughts then this may never happen to me. And that may or may not work for you.
The problem is if you are faced with a violent situation and you have no answers, your only choice is to capitulate. Your only choice is to give up and to be completely at the mercy of your predator. And you have to hope to God that that person isn’t intent on maiming, crippling or killing you. Needless to say, it’s just not a good position to be in.
Especially when, in a relatively short amount of time, you can get principles and methodologies that would serve you well for the rest of your life. These not only serve you well should violence ever come your way but, as most clients have told me, one of the biggest benefits coming from training in TFT is how it helps you realize all the things you are participating in that can lead to violent situations... all the avoidable things that you are involved in that, just by sheer luck, haven’t hurt you but could in an instant.
These clients tell me this alone is worth the price of the training. The fact that they’re now able to avoid things that before they thought they had to participate in. They don’t respond verbally to situations previously they thought they had to respond to like getting aggressive when they’re driving. They’re actually able to live a much more peaceful life, much more relaxed. Why? Because they understand the tool of violence. They understand when it’s appropriate. They understand when it’s inappropriate. And they’re able to make decisions to avoid ever putting themselves in the position where they’d need to use it.
And that alone is worth the education in and of itself.
